What will the tiles look like?
The tiles will include the name of the educator; whether they were a teacher, counselor or administrator; their dates of employment; and the Mustang logo. Here’s an example:
Where will the tiles be placed?
The new Quad will include several larger planters through the Quad area. The plan is to line the outside of the planters with the tiles.
When I donate, am I buying a tile for a specific teacher, counselor, or administrator?
No. Since the goal is to have a tile for all of these dedicated educators, we want to make sure there are sufficient funds for everyone. So your donation is going to fund the overall project. However, you may indicate the teacher (or teachers) in whose honor you are making the donation and we will make those teachers (or families of those teachers) aware of these dedicated donations.
Is my donation tax deductible?
Yes. The Mira Costa Alumni Association is a 501(c) nonprofit and all donations are tax deductible.
Who will get a tile?
All retired teachers, counselors and administrators (Vice Principals, Principals) who have worked at Mira Costa since the founding of the school in the 1950s will have a tile in their name.
Will current teachers, counselors, and administrators get a tile?
Yes. As current teachers retire, new tiles will be added with their names and dates of employment. It will be a wonderful way to acknowledge their retirement and service to the high school.
Will there be tiles for coaches?
The many coaches who were also teachers will each have a tile in their name. (For example: Mike Cook, Daelea Aldrich, Bill Cooper, Jack Fernandez, Bob Fish, Dave Holland, Don Morrow, just to name a few). At this time, the project does not include coaches who were not also employed as teachers, counselors, or administrators.
How much will the project cost?
The estimated cost of each tile is $15 to $20. With approximately 800 retired teachers, counselors and administrators that’s between $12,000 and $16,000. Additional funds will be needed to add tiles as current teachers retire.
What construction is occurring at the high school and what are the plans for the new Quad?
In 2008, voters in Manhattan Beach approved measure BB funding much needed construction and renovation of the high school. The renovation, which is reaching its final stages, includes a new math and science building, needed electrical and structural upgrades to existing classrooms, a new performing arts building and much more.
The construction also involves the creation of a new central common area (Quad) that will serve as the main focus of the campus and a gathering place for students.
Can’t this project be paid for with the construction bond monies?
No. There are restrictions on the type of construction projects that can be covered under the Measure BB bond, preventing those monies from being used for this project.
When will the tiles be added?
The completion of the Quad construction is anticipated for this Spring. The tiles will be added at the end of the construction.
